A 21 year old driver was killed early Saturday about 12:45a.m. when his car slammed into a loading dock in Queens.

The driver’s BMW, was reportedly speeding on eastbound Union Turnpike when he lost control of the vehicle.

The car jumped the divider of the roadway, crashed into the loading dock of a Queens supermarket in Glendale bursting into flames.

The 21 year old driver, was pronounced dead later at Jamaica Hospital.

Speed Kills

“Sadly, speeding often times will lead to a crash,” said Paul Ajlouny, New York car accident lawyer. “vehicle accidents involving speed end up with victims suffering serious injury, or even death. The speeding driver, vehicles in his or her path, any passengers, cyclists or pedestrian’s are all in danger.”

“Social and situational factors such as impairment, mobile phone use, fatigue, social group and peers — and in this case — speed, affects the crash risk of a young driver; as seen in this tragic accident” says Mr. Ajlouny.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that 5,933 speeding drivers died in crashes in 2014, the most recent year available. Another 1,835 passengers in those speeding cars died, along with 1,136 occupants of other vehicles, 314 pedestrians and 46 bicyclists.1

NHTSA said 112,580 people died in speeding-related crashes from 2005 through 2014. The number of speeding-related crashes dropped from 13,583 to 9,283 per year during that decade. Speeding’s share of fatalities also declined from 31% to 28% during that period.

But fatalities have begun to edge up in 2015 and 2016, leaving safety experts scrambling for ways to curb the carnage.
