Man dies in car wreck Bronx

A 24 year old college student died Thursday, April 13, 2017 after the car he was riding in crashed on the Bronx River Parkway, according to NYPD. Police suspect that the driver, who remains critically injured, was under the influence at the time of the early morning crash.

Deadly Crash East Gun Hill Road in Norwood

Deadly Crash East Gun Hill Road in Norwood, Bronx, NY.

The 22-year-old driver lost control of his black Honda Accord and struck a wall while attempting to exit the parkway at East Gun Hill Road in the Norwood section of the Bronx. The car has a Taxi & Limousine Commission license plate.

Jesus Paulino, 24, was rushed to Jacobi Medical center, where he passed away. The driver remains in critical condition.

A TLC spokeswoman said the driver did not have a hack license. A manager at KJ Transportation, the livery company affiliated with the vehicle, could not be reached.

This tragic accident is a prime example of what happens when a driver gets behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, after a long night of partying. Driving while under the influence is a dangerously wrong choice! How many times does something like this have to happen before people take seriously the inevitable consequences of their choices! The driver in this tragic event, possibly speeding and impaired, swerves to take an exit and miscalculates, smashing head on into a wall, killing his passenger.

According to New York Car Accident Lawyer Paul Ajlouny, “All it takes is a mere second in error to cause a fatal crash. Is driving drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs worth the loss of life?” says Mr. Ajlouny.

Impaired Driving: Get the Facts

Every day, 28 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This amounts to one death every 53 minutes.1 The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $44 billion.2

How big is the problem?

  • In 2014, 9,967 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third (31%) of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.1
  • Of the 1,070 traffic deaths among children ages 0 to 14 years in 2014, 209 (19%) involved an alcohol-impaired driver.1
  • Of the 209 child passengers ages 14 and younger who died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2014, over half (116) were riding in the vehicle with the alcohol-impaired driver.1
  • In 2014, over 1.1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.3 That’s one percent of the 121 million self-reported episodes of alcohol-impaired driving among U.S. adults each year.4
  • Drugs other than alcohol (legal and illegal) are involved in about 16% of motor vehicle crashes.5
  • Marijuana use is increasing6 and 13% of nighttime, weekend drivers have marijuana in their system.7
  • Marijuana users were about 25% more likely to be involved in a crash than drivers with no evidence of marijuana use, however other factors – such as age and gender – may account for the increased crash risk among marijuana users.5

New York City police are writing more tickets citywide for the most serious traffic violations, according to a new WNYC analysis of police ticketing data. Targeting dangerous driver behavior is central to Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero plan to reduce traffic deaths (pdf).

Sunset Park’s 72nd precinct had the biggest increase, where officers wrote almost 80% more tickets in January, February, and March 2014 over last year. Red Hook’s nearby 76th precinct, the 24th precinct, including the Upper West Side neighborhood had drops in ticketing; where three people were killed in January.

*A data note: The 121st precinct in Staten Island was formed in July 2013 with portion of the 120th and 122nd precincts. In order to compare 2013 and 2014 data, WNYC has combined the current 120th, 121st and 122nd precincts. [1]
