Deadly streets for cyclists in New York

Bicyclist in the last week have been hit and killed on the streets of New York.

Three bicyclists were struck by a van during the NYC Century Bike Tour on Sunday morning, critically injuring one of them, police said. The alleged driver of the van, 39-year-old Abel Pina of Brooklyn, was arrested on charges of vehicular assault, driving without a license and driving while impaired.

EAST FLATBUSH — A 35 year old cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries when he appeared to ride into a busy intersection ( at Utica Ave. and Empire Blvd. in Crown Heights) and get struck by livery cab driver Thursday morning, according to police and dramatic video of the incident.

A box truck fatally struck a cyclist on a LOWER MANHATTAN street corner Thursday afternoon, slamming into her while making a right turn, police said. The 38-year-old truck driver was headed east on Walker St. at about 5:45 p.m. when he turned right onto Broadway, striking Yan Jindee, 48, cops said.

A bicyclist was slammed by an MTA bus on Thursday afternoon — and is clinging to life in the hospital, officials said. The cyclist was riding on Kissena Boulevard near the intersection of Peck Avenue in FLUSHING at about 1 pm when the bike crossed over the center line and crashed into a Q17 bus that was headed in the opposite direction.

Twenty people died in New York City traffic in June, and 5,514 were injured, according to City Hall’s Vision Zero View crash data map.

Of eight fatal crashes on New York streets, no motorists were known to have been charged for causing a death.

Chelsea cyclist Dan Hanegby swerved into the path of the charter bus driver who killed him, though video later revealed the driver sideswiped Hanegby while attempting to pass.

A charter bus driver killed cyclist Michael Mamoukakis. Both drivers were off-route, and both crashes occurred in the 10th Precinct, where bus companies commonly use streets where buses aren’t supposed to be. Though both Hanegby and Mamoukakis appeared to have the right of way, no charges were filed by NYPD or Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance in either case.

Cyclists Corbin Carr and Ronald Burke were killed within hours of one another in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Both victims ran red lights are said to have run red lights. Witnesses said Burke was struck from behind by a motorist traveling in the same direction, contradicting NYPD’s initial account of the crash. The driver who hit Burke fled the scene.

Daniel Nelson and Gabriel Garcia were killed while walking in Staten Island and the Bronx, respectively, by hit-and-run drivers who were not immediately caught or identified.

According to New York car accident attorney Paul Ajlouny, “Most drivers who strike people in NYC are not charged. Nearly half of motorists who kill a NYC pedestrian or cyclist do not receive so much as a citation for negligent driving.” says Mr. Ajlouny.

Car jumps curb Midtown, pedestrian suffers serious injury

A woman while standing on a curb is suddenly struck by a car that jumped the curb, pinning the women against a light pole  in Midtown, Manhattan, NY. almost ripping her leg off, according to eyewitnesses.

The accident happened along Second Avenue near East 49th Street around 4:30 p.m. Monday when a Mercedes traveling south on Second was cut off by another car and went up onto the sidewalk, injuring the women. witnesses said.

Witnesses describe the ghastly scene as this poor the women, conscious and alert, lay pinned by the vehicle, with her lower leg ripped open. There was a medical clinic across the street with doctors rushing to the women’s aid until EMT arrived. The women was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition.

The accident is still under under investigation.

Car crash injures 4 in Front of Midtown Apple Store

A cab in Midtown, jumped the curb injuring four people this Monday afternoon, according to NYFD. The accident happened at Fifth Avenue and East 59th Street in front of the Apple Store in New York City.

The accident victims were immediately transported to New York-Presbyterian Hospital with serious injuries.

Investigations are still trying to determine if the victims were actually pedestrians or passengers in a black Lyft cab.

According to witnesses the vehicle was heading east on 59th Street when the driver apparently lost control, spun around and smashed head-on into a lamppost.

Air Conditioning Unit falls from Crane 30 stories NYC injuring 12

An Air Conditioning unit has plummeted 30 stories injuring several people. It has been reported, Sunday in Midtown, around 10:45 AM, an air conditioning unit being hoisted by a crane fell in Midtown Manhattan, when the cable snapped, injuring 10 people.

The air conditioning unit broke off the side of the 30-story building on Madison Avenue between East 38th and East 39th Street before landing below.

Multiple people injured today when crane fell 30 stories in NYC.

Two construction workers and eight pedestrians suffered minor injuries from falling debris, officials said.

Worker falls 24 stories down elevator shaft

BREAKING NEWS MIDTOWN MANHATTAN — A worker falls to his death 24 stories down an elevator shaft into the cellar of a construction site for a 29-story luxury hotel building, according to officials.

The elevator collapse around 12:40 p.m. at 301 W. 46th St., near Eighth Avenue at the site of the future Riu Hotel. The worker who remain unidentified dead at Bellevue Hospital at 1:26 p.m., according to NYPD.

There had been previous safety citations when another worker fell from the fifth to the second floor during demolition of the building in July 2013, according to Department of Buildings records.

The Spanish-owned hotel is designed by Berg and Flynn Architecture and is being being built by the Rinaldi Group.

“The Rinaldi Group is incredibly saddened by this horrible accident and our prayers are with the family,” officials at the company said.

The building’s owner, Pinapple Developments, did not immediately responded to requests for comment.

The accident is still under investigation.

The man died at the scene of the accident on E. 44th St. near Second Ave.
