LIE deadly crash cause, excessive speed.

Speed has been determined to be a factor in the LIE deadly crash that has taken the lives of 6 people. Authorities believe that 26 year old Carmelo Pinales may have been speeding at a rate of 100 miles per hour.

Scene, victims in Long Island Expressway crash

A former aid to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, 29 year old Scott Martella of Smithtown, was among the victims who were killed in the accident. The accident occurred Sunday morning around 9:30 a.m, near Exit 68 on the LIE.

Scott Martella was driving in the westbound lane of the Long Island Expressway near Exit 68 in Manorville, NY. with his fiancee, 29 year old Shelbi Thurau. As they were driving an eastbound Subaru went airborne and landed in the westbound lane. Their car was crushed.

The driver of the Subaru according to witnesses apparently lost control of his vehicle, which crossed over the grassy median, went airborne and struck two vehicles, a BMW and a Honda, that were traveling westbound.

The Subaru was driven by 26 year old Carmelo Pinales of Hicksville. His sister Patricia Pinales was in the passenger seat and his 10 year old son in the back. Scott Martella, Carmelo Pinales and Patricia Pinales all were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Pinales 10 year old son, Christopher, later died from his injuries at the hospital. Shelbi Thurau, Scott’s fiancee survived.

The BMW was driven by 73 year old Marvin Tenzer. He was with his wife Sandra and another couple: Helen and Isidore Adelson. Mr Adleson died from his injuries yesterday night and the rest of the BMW occupants sustained injuries. His wife Helen, succumbed to her injuries and has also passed. Witnesses who saw the Subaru passing them before the accident said the car “was flying”.

Relatives of the Pinales’ family say they believe an earlier accident left an oil spill, which contributed to the crash.
