The Cross Bronx Expressway is an intricate part of New York’s mode of transportation that connects to New York’s Interstate highway stretching six lane for 8.3 miles, running through South Bronx.
The Bronx Expressway is congested with delivery vans, 18-wheelers, garbage trucks, log carriers, cement trucks and motorists just like you and me. So definitely attentive driver safety is required to get through this stretch of dangerous highway.
Dangers of the Cross Bronx Expressway
The Cross Bronx Expressway, has quite a few problems with the road that include horizontal sight distance causing vehicles to slow down, no median shoulder, a lack of paved outside shoulders, stop and go vehicles, the need for speed, adding up to a hazardous situation if not paying 100% attention.
The Bronx Expressway is also poorly lit, the road pavement is rough and faulty. The Expressway does not offer service roads. At the street level termini of ramps, numerous turning options are available at the intersections. This, along with short weaving distances between the off-ramp/service road merge and downstream signals, creates a potential for accidents.
New York’s highway connecting through the Bronx connect to a trio of highways (Major Deegan Expressway, Bruckner Expressway, and the New England Thruway) bisected by the Cross Bronx Expressway. Four parkways (Henry Hudson, Mosholu, Bronx River, and Hutchinson River), along with the Grand Concourse, provide alternatives for north/south passenger car traffic.
There is no avoiding congestion when trying to cross between the East and West Bronx. Lest not forget the Bronx River, Bronx River Parkway, Woodlawn Cemetery, and Bronx Park while traveling through the Cross Bronx and Bruckner expressways.
That moment when your rear-ended by a tractor trailer, especially with children on board, can be traumatizing. These types of car accidents can leave serious injury, and even fatalities.
